Fundado em 1935, o New York Film Critics Circle é composto por críticos de jornais diários, semanais, revistas e publicações online qualificadas de interesse geral. Anualmente, os membros da organização se reúnem em Nova York para deliberar e eleger os melhores filmes, atores e diretores do ano em questão. O New York Film Critics Circle, juntamente com o Los Angeles Film Critics Association e o National Society of Film Critics, compõe o que é frequentemente chamado de “Trifecta”. Essas três organizações são consideradas influentes e prestigiadas no mundo da crítica cinematográfica, desempenhando papéis significativos na avaliação e reconhecimento dos melhores filmes do circuito de premiações.

Em 2022, “Tár”, dirigido por Todd Field, consagrou-se como o grande vencedor da edição, arrebatando os cobiçados prêmios de Melhor Filme e Melhor Atriz, concedido à Cate Blanchett. Além disso, “The Banshees of Inisherin” destacou-se ao conquistar os troféus de Melhor Roteiro e Melhor Ator, honra conferida a Colin Farrell, que também recebeu uma menção por “After Yang”, filme dirigido por Kogonada. Nas categorias de atuação coadjuvante, o mérito recaiu sobre Keke Palmer por “Nope” e Ku Huy Quan por “Everything Everywhere All At Once”, que veio repetir a vitória na cerimônia do Oscar.
